21 Movies To Watch While You’re High – Part 1!

What pairs best with Autumn weather? Maybe pumpkin spice and warm scarves, but we’re talking about a good old-fashioned movie night! There’s nothing cozier than getting baked and watching a movie wrapped in a soft blanket with snacks in hand. We’ve been daydreaming about rainy evenings with our fall candles flickering as we watch our favorite films.

Over the last week, we polled our crew to see what movies they like to pair with a good high. We heard everything from classic stoner comedies to action to some surprising cult classics. Below is part one of the responses we got! Stay tuned for more movie recs in part two!

STONER COMEDIES

Dazed & Confused (1993)

Rated R | Where to watch: Hulu | Amazon | Google Play

A stoner classic, this coming-of-age comedy centers around a cast of teenagers on their last day of school in the mid-70s. With famous lines like Matthew McConaughey’s iconic “alright alright alright” and “it’d be a lot cooler if you did” this flick is sure to hit every stoner’s funny bone.

Dude, Where’s My Car (2000)

Rated PG-13 | Where to watch: Amazon | Google Play | Apple TV

This classic stoner buddy comedy stars Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott as two best friends who find themselves in a pickle after a night of debauchery. What starts as an effort to retrace their steps from the night before, quickly turns into comedy chaos and a quest to save the world.

Half Baked (1998)

Rated R | Where to watch: Hulu | Showtime | Amazon

From the golden age of stoner comedies, Half Baked stars Dave Chappelle and Jim Breuer among others as a ragtag group of friends that are in over their heads after a night of smoking an ultra-potent medical strain.

Next Friday (2000)

Rated R | Where to watch: HBOmax | Google Play | Amazon

Written and produced by Ice Cube, Next Friday is the sequel to the 1995 film Friday and features the misadventures of Craig (Ice Cube’s character) after relocating to avoid trouble – and the lesson that trouble can follow you anywhere.

Pineapple Express (2008)

Rated R | Where to watch: Netflix | Google Play | Amazon

THE stoner comedy of the late 2000s, Pineapple Express is synonymous with the genre. This buddy comedy stars Seth Rogan and James Franco and their comedic misfortunes (like being framed for murder) after smoking the rare and potent strain Pineapple Express.

Cheech & Chong Up In Smoke (1980)

Rated R | Where to watch: Amazon Prime | Paramount+ | Google Play

The duo that started it all in their first feature-length film – widely thought of as the creation of the stoner comedy genre. Up In Smoke features the comedic misadventures of a “slacker” with dreams of becoming a drummer going on the road and meeting a kindred spirit along the way.

ACTION

Life of Pi (2012)

Rated PG | Where to watch: HBOmax | Hulu | Google Play

A visual masterpiece, this film is absolute eye candy. Life of Pi is a beautiful adventure drama that centers around the story of a young boy and a tiger, both shipwrecked and adrift on the ocean aboard a lifeboat together. As time goes on, the pair must learn to trust each other in order to survive.

300 (2006)

Rated R | Where to watch: Amazon | Apple TV | Google Play

A heart-racing epic filled to the brim with action and visuals inspired by graphic novels. This historical fiction centers around the heroic tale of 300 Spartans who go up against the massive invading Persian army. This edge-of-your-seat tale is known for its oiled-up abs and lines like “THIS. IS. SPARTA!”

Godzilla (1998)

Rated PG-13 | Where to watch: Hulu | Starz | Amazon Prime

While our crew didn’t specify which Godzilla film they enjoyed (we think they’re all worth a watch) the 1998 version has to be our personal favorite. This adaptation of our favorite Titan’s story stars Matthew Broderick and Maria Pitillo as underdogs fighting to save New York City with just enough comedy to keep the thrill ride from being overwhelming.

ANIME & ANIMATED

Princess Mononoke (1997)

Rated PG-13 | Where to watch: HBOmax | Apple TV | Google Play

From the acclaimed anime director Hayao Miyazaki comes another beautiful visual masterpiece and one of the first of Miyazaki’s films to be dubbed in English. Princess Mononoke is a cautionary tale of human greed, corruption, and the pollution it creates.

Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)

Rated PG | Where to watch: HBOmax | Apple TV | Google Play

Also from the studio of Hayao Miyazaki comes a love story like no other. Wrapped in the marvelous artistic style of Miyazaki is a tale of a young woman swept up in the adventures of a seemingly self-absorbed wizard, a living scarecrow, the wizard’s young apprentice, and a sassy fire demon named Calcifer all living in a wondrous walking castle.

The Iron Giant (1999)

Rated PG | Where to watch: HBOmax | Apple TV | Google Play

From Warner Bros. animation comes what is widely considered a modern animated classic. Iron Giant follows the chaos of a young boy who accidentally befriends a metal giant from outer space – all during the Cold War era. Between a determined U.S. government agent and an overworked single mom, he has to keep his giant out of sight or risk being separated. Iron Giant is a touching story of true friendship and what it means to sacrifice for the ones you love.
